Mommy Mondays: Paisley Jean is One Month Old

I don't know where the time went, but yesterday officially marked Paisley's one month birthday!!! I hate how quickly time seems to move - and it gets faster with each baby!

Today we had Paisley's one month checkup. Girlfriend was all smiles showing off her personality to the doctor and nurses until it was time for her to get one shot...and then she cried harder than I've ever seen her cry. My poor mama heart was broken. I dread the two month checkup and all the shots that go with that appointment.

Having fun at the doctor's office - before shots!

Paisley's One Month Stats:
*8 pounds, 9 ounces (the size Lacie was at birth and smaller than Blakely at birth)
*21 inches
*25th percentile across the board

The doctor was very impressed with Paisley's love of tummy time and her ability to lift and hold her head up!  Woohoo Go Paisley!

And just for fun here's a comparison of my three girls at one month!

From Left to Right - Lacie, Blakely, Paisley

Lacie's One Month Stats:
*10 pounds, 11 ounces
*22 inches

Blakely's One Month Stats:
*11 pounds, 1/2 ounce
*21 2/4 inches

Friday Favorites: Newborn Necessities

The HiloskyHouse is currently in the newborn stage! Yesterday Paisley turned 4 weeks old and Sunday will mark her 1 month birthday! I consider the newborn stage to be from birth to about 12 weeks.  I'm sure that at least one well meaning person has told you that all the baby needs during this time is you. And while that is a basically true statement, there are lots of things that can help during these amazing (and exhausting) first weeks with your new baby! Now that we are experiencing this stage for the third time, I have a pretty good list of what I couldn't live without in those first few weeks!

1. Swaddle Blankets
Swaddle your baby!  I gave up swaddling Lacie after a week and that was a huge mistake. She never slept. Ever. For 6 months!  Blakely wore her swaddle day and night for the first 6 weeks and then wore it for nighttime and naps until 5 or 6 months! She slept like a champ. We are carrying on with swaddling Paisley all day and night and she is super peaceful. She will be fussing at me after a diaper change and as soon as I begin to wrap her she calms right down! I promise that swaddling will help your baby be a better sleeper, especially in those first weeks when they tend to startle themselves awake. Get the nurses in the hospital to teach you how to do swaddle properly.  If other people comment on how tightly your baby is swaddled, you are doing it right! If you can't master the swaddle blankets there are lots of great cheat wraps out there that work great!  I have two favorite swaddles:

*The Halo SleepSack Swaddle.  It's a sleep sack and swaddle combo!  These were Blakely's favorite!

*Aden and Anais Swaddle Blankets.  These blankets are amazing.  I have a set of four that I've had since Lacie was born.  They seriously get softer everytime you wash them.  They are also really big, which makes swaddling easier!  They fold up tiny for the diaper bag too.

2. A Cozy and Safe Place for Baby
You need to be able to put your baby down so that you can rest or shower or tend to your older children! New babies love bring placed in cozy small spaces (rather than a big open crib). I personally love the Swing and the Rock and Play sleeper. You only need one but if you can have both that's great too. Lacie loved the constant movement of the swing and my other girls seem to prefer being still. Oh and I swaddle them before placing them in their cozy spot.

3. Mustela Cold Cream Stick
I've blogged about it before but this little stick is like chapstick for your whole face. It's amazing for little kids but especially newborns! It protects their delicate skin and gets rid of dry flakey skin fast! You can also use it on their lips for babies who get those little sucking calluses from bottles or pacifiers.

4. Mustela No Rinse Cleansing Fluid
I could not live without this stuff. It's not recommended to constantly give brand new babies baths.  However, they get messy a lot between the spit ups and the crazy poop explosions. That is why this stuff is your best friend. It's perfect to clean little baby behinds or the spit up that dribbles down into their adorable neck rolls! And it's great for giving "baths" until the umbilical cord falls off!

5. A Boppy Pillow
Whether you decide to nurse or bottle feed your baby, having a Boppy pillow offers a lot of support during all of those feelings. This was especially helpful to me since I had 3 c-sections. It allowed my babies to rest across my lap without directly pressing on my incision.

6. An Infant Carrier Style CarSeat
When I was pregnant with Lacie, I felt like there was a big push to get a convertible carseat that could grow with her from infancy through kindergarten.  But I opted for the carrier seat, and I have never regretted it.  Yes they outgrow it quickly and you have to buy a new carseat within the first 12 months.  However, it is so so easy when you have a brand-new baby!  No worries about waking them up when they fall asleep in the car (and they will always fall asleep in the car).  Just pick up the entire carseat!  Easy!  We love Britax brand carseats!

7. A Sling or Hands Free Wrap
This was not an essential for me when I only had one baby.  Now that I have two toddlers and a baby, I need my hands free during the day.  I have both the Moby Wrap and a Sakura Bloom Ring Sling.  I like them both for different reasons.  The ring sling is really easy to use and put on.  It also folds up small - perfect to throw in the diaper bag!  The Moby can be complicated to put on if you have a fussy baby.  However the Moby does distribute weight evenly where the Ring Sling keeps the weight on one side.

8. Newborn Nightgowns
When you find out you are having a baby, you will go out and buy tons of cute outfits.  Other people will buy you lots of clothes too!  In fact, I don't think I had to buy any clothing for Lacie's entire first year!  But the best piece of clothing you can get is a newborn nightgown - even if you are having a boy! They are awesome for nighttime!  Just put one on and swaddle the baby.  These will make your life so much easier when you are changing a diaper in the middle of the night! Seriously you do not want to deal with tons of snaps or zippers at 2am.

9. A Memory Book and Box
Your life is about to change in the most amazing way!  Make sure you have a place to write down memories and save little mementos like hospital bracelets, hats, footprints, etc.

Show and Tell: New Year's Resolutions

I'm super excited to be linking up with Momfessionals for a new series called Show and Tell Tuesdays!  Today's is all about New Year's Resolutions and Goals!  I always made resolutions but I do not always stick with for an entire year.  I am definitely guilty of giving up after a month or so.  However, last year my goal was to take more pictures - specifically at least one picture everyday!  That's how #hiloskyeveryday2014 was born.  I can happily report that I took and posted 365 pictures - I didn't miss one day!  And I loved it so much that I am continuing that into 2015!  But I did also make some new resolutions.

1. Goodbye Baby Weight
Three babies in three years will really do a number to your body!  And like most women, I gained more each time around.  I clocked in a weight gain of 50 pounds with Paisley!  And this is the year that I am determined to loose that baby weight.  I know this resolution sounds a bit shallow or vain, and in part it is because I definitely want to look better and fit into my pre-baby clothes.  But there is definitely a bigger picture with this goal.  I want to be healthy for myself, my husband, and especially my three girls.  They deserve a mommy who is happy, healthy, and full of energy!
Lots of things will need to happen in order to meet this goal.  One is eating wayyyy healthier than I did during pregnancy.  Another is to drink more water.  This is really hard for me in the winter when I could live of off coffee.  The third piece of the weight loss puzzle is going back to the gym (once I get the all clear from my doctor).  I need to find a way to exercise consistently - at least a few days per week at the gym and a few days per week at home! Finally, lots and lots of yoga (my favorite way to be fit both mentally and physically).
Oh and you may notice that the sign says John needs to loose his baby weight too!  He definitely packed on a few sympathy pounds during my three pregnancies!  He was eating those pints of ice cream right next to me!

2. Plan Two Dates Per Month
In 2014, John and I tried to have a date night (or a date day) at least once a month.  This year, I am raising the bar and striving for two!  It is so important to get in that alone time, even if it's not that often!  When you have kids, you go from basically every night being date night to never having any alone time (especially in those first few months).  One of the best things for our relationship is having a strict schedule and bedtime for the kids so we go get that much needed alone time every night after 7 pm.  But with a newborn all bets are off and you are back to around the clock duty!  I am looking forward to getting out of the house two times each month for a special date!  And then once Paisley starts sleeping through the night with a set bedtime, we can go back to our mini nightly dates at home!

3. Bring Religion into Daily Life
I would say that John and I were both raised in households that placed a high value on the importance of religion, and we have lost that over the years.  We made an effort to get married in the church and baptize all of our children...but that has been the extent of religion for the past five plus years.  We both agree that we need to (and have the desire to) bring religion into our (and most importantly our children's) daily lives!  This means praying daily and trying to go to church.  It may mean finding a new church, one that I feel more connected with than our current church.  I don't have a clear picture of what this resolution looks like, I just know that it is something we need to be conscious of working on.

4. Cook New Foods
I know this may sound crazy coming from a person who blogs recipes, but I definitely want to make an effort to make new recipes and try new foods in 2015!  The last 8 weeks of my pregnancy and the first weeks with a new baby have been filled with LOTS of takeout!  And I'm totally okay with that.  But as Paisley gets on a schedule and *hopefully* begins sleeping more, my goal is to get back in the kitchen and try new recipes!  It is so easy to rely on tried and true dishes that I know how to make without having to follow an unfamiliar recipe.  This year my goal is to try to make four brand new dinners each month (and that is really only one per week when you think about it).  I think that this goal is really doable, and it will be fun and beneficial for the whole family!

What are your New Year's Resolutions and Goals?

Mommy Mondays: Welcome to the World Paisley Jean

On Thursday December 11, 2014 at 10:45 a.m., we joyfully welcomed our third daughter Paisley Jean Hilosky into the world!  She was born via a scheduled c-section a little early (37 weeks, 6 days) due to my pregnancy induced hypertension.  Praise the Lord she was a healthy baby and the procedure went smoothly!  Paisley weighed in at 7 pounds, 8 ounces and 19 1/4 inches!  She was the smallest of our three babies - leaving the hospital at 6 pounds 12 ounces!  Considering Blakely didn't even fit into newborn diapers or clothing, this was teeny tiny in our eyes!

Me looking very tired, but so so so happy to finally be holding my baby girl in my arms rather than having her in my belly!

We were blessed with such wonderful nurses during our hospital stay, who made this sweet little sign and bow hat for Paisley!

There are no words for how amazing it is to watch your older babies meet and love on your newest baby!  It actually feels like your heart could explode with happiness!

After three days in the hospital, we came home!  Paisley was so happy to be home that she gave me her very first (half) smile in her sleep!

Baby toes!

The milk coma face!

Snuggling with Daddy!

More Daddy Snuggles!

Sweet Baby Girl!

On December 28, 2014 we baptized our sweet angel at the church where John and I were married and both Lacie and Blakely were baptized!  It was my crazy wonderful husband's idea to baptize her so soon rather than wait until she was a few months older.  Even though I was exhausted, it was actually easier since Paisley pretty much slept through the whole thing (other than this sweet picture that we took before the sacrament started).

The whole family!

Paisley wearing her paisley!

The Little Sister!

Paisley at three weeks old is already showing us her amazing personality!

This Thursday will mark four weeks since Paisley entered the world and officially made us a family of FIVE!  But in most ways, it feels like she has always been here.  I can't wait to document and share all of the fun milestones that will happen this year!
